The Leadership and Service Center hosted an open forum October 4th at 7 p.m. to discuss next year’s Homecoming. The purpose of the forum was to find out what makes Homecoming so great on campus and ways to improve it. The room was filled with many concerned students who wanted to discuss what they believe are important elements that should be implemented in the 2016 Homecoming. Students on campus felt as if some things weren’t implemented into this year’s Homecoming that included all students. More so, minority students expressed the lack of cultural events during Homecoming Week. “Homecoming is supposed to be inclusive to all students,” said Taylor Dolby, advisor for the Homecoming Committee. “It’s supposed to be a series of events that welcomes all students at USC into one kind of collaborative experience, and right now, unfortunately, it doesn’t seem that way.” One of the ideas that students voiced was a concert from a diverse performer with a genre of music that most students at USC listen to. Students also suggested having a mix of events and activities on campus during Homecoming that will be open to anyone. “We learned a lot of different things about what people want to see in the future and also how to incorporate inclusivity, but also diversity,” said Sydney Garner, a member of the 2015 Homecoming Executive Board. Shardasia Anderson, a junior nursing major at USC, said, “Progress was made to a certain extent, and from now on the anger and frustration will continue into next semester and plenty on the board to represent us on Homecoming Commission and Carolina Productions.” If anyone would like to get involved with assisting with Homecoming, applications will be going up online next semester. Be on the lookout from Homecoming Commission for more information.
