Before the SEC opener on September 9th, Carolina’s women’s soccer team was undefeated.
After taking on Georgia, that record remains. The game started with an up-tempo speed by early pressure on the ball from Georgia’s senior forward, Lauren Tanner. Carolina’s first attempt on goal by Daija Griffen resulted in a penalty kick.
Shortly after, Daija would assist Savannah McCaskill to score her and USC’s first goal of the game. Throughout the game, McCaskill would continuously answer to Georgia’s defense with another goal 3 minutes and 39 seconds into the second half.
Carolina’s third and final goal would be by Sophie Groff with an assist on goal by Chelsea Drennan. Earlier in the game, Groff’s first goal was flagged as off sides, therefore wasn’t counted.
The tempo of the game slowed down after Carolina’s unceasing attempts on goal. During the duration of the game, the ball was predominately in Gamecock possession. Carolina took 15 shots on goal, compared to only 3 for the Bulldogs. In those 3 shots, Carolina’s one and only save was a plunge by freshman goalkeeper Mikayla Krzeczowski.
The effort by the Carolina women resulted in a 3-0 finish. McCaskill’s performance was not the first, but actually third multi-goal game of the season. Voted offensive player of the year by teammates and coaches during the 2015 season, Savannah McCaskill is headed down another season of success.
Griffen, McCaskill, Groff, Drennan, and Krzeczowski led their team to the #14 ranking position, and an ongoing 6-0 title!
